‘손 꼭 잡고 지는 석양을 바라보자’ Episode 1 & 2

Viewer ratings (Nielsen Korea)
Ep 1 & 2 (2018-03-21)       2.1% & 3.4%
Being used to dramas previously being broadcast one episode per screening day, I was surprised it’s now changed to 2 episodes for the same one hour duration. Though this drama would have 16 screening days, the total is 32 episodes.
The first 2 episodes might be a bit slow but the plot is being set in place with the introduction of the main characters. Wife Hyun Joo is ecstatic to learn from her latest health checkup result that she does not have a brain tumour but her joy is short-lived when told it’s a misdiagnosis. Having witnessed how much her mum had suffered from the same ailment, she is reluctant to undergo treatment as she would rather cherish the last moments of her life. She had always been fearful that the disease is hereditary and now her worst fear seems to be coming true.
Husband Do Young is renowned as a brilliant architect but due to his strong pride and uncompromising stance against making designs which are only practical but lacking in aesthetics, his career had stagnated.
He is surprised to receive a major project offer from a global investment and finance company JQ Enterprise. But just when he thought life is finally looking up for him, he’s caught in a dilemma when he finds out that JQ’s Asia Regional Manager is his first love Shin Da Hye. Worried that his association with Da Hye would greatly upset Hyun Joo, he is prepared not to accept the project.
It is unclear at the moment what had occurred between Do Young, Hyun Joo and Da Hye in the past. Some of the hints from this episode make me curious. Why does Da Hye feel she has a right to take Do Young back and what did she mean when she blatantly said that Hyun Joo had stolen him from her. Why did Hyun Joo’s best friend Hong Suk comment that Do Young did not break up with Da Hye because he had wanted to but because he pitied Hyun Joo. I’m sure all these will be explained later but now the storm is brewing …..

Do Young receives a project offer from JQ’s Seoul Branch Manager Park Young Geun

Hyun Joo is happy and thankful that her health checkup results were positive. Unfortunately it turned out that there was a mistake and she would have to return to the hospital for another checkup.

Da Hye returns to Seoul after having left for the US ten years ago. Without mincing her words, she declares that she is here to take Do Young back.

Neuro surgeon Jang Seok Jun feels that Hyun’s Joo condition is treatable and would like her to have a re-scan.

Upset with his nonchalant attitude towards her fears, Hyun Joo dismisses his advice and angrily walks out.

Do Young at a press conference for the contract signing with JQ Enterprise. One of the reporters had asked an awkward question regarding the cause of  his career slump but he managed to answer it with confidence.

Do Young is shocked to find out that Da Hye is JQ’s Asia Regional Manager.

Though this project offer is a good opportunity to turn his career around, Do Young tells Hyun Joo that he will not take it up. He knows that his working with Da Hye would greatly upset her.

To Do Young’s surprise, Hyun Joo does not want him to give it up as it would be good  for his career.
And yet, it is obvious to him that she is hurting inside.

Dr Jang turns up to persuade Hyun Joo to go for treatment. He is adamant that he will save her and cannot let her die.

I will ask you one last time. Do you want to live or die?

I want to live
